Artificial intelligence is rapidly gaining ground in Catalonia’s BioRegion, with 168 AI tools currently registered by 73 entities, and 58% already in advanced stages of development or deployment. Notably, 83% of these AI solutions are designed for use in hospital settings, highlighting their relevance for real-world care. Public-private collaboration also plays a key role, with 44% of partnerships actively involved in the deployment of AI technologies across the healthcare system.

Catalonia: A magnet for life sciences FDI

The volume of fDi in the life sciences and healthcare industry totaled €2.28 billion over the five-year period from 2020 to 2024, comprising a total of 46 projects, representing an 18% growth over the previous period and accounting for 44% of the Spanish total. Furthermore, the sector has created 6,050 jobs in the same period, up 127%.

Proof of this life science spotlight on Catalonia can be seen in the fact that it is the 2nd-ranked region in the EU27 with the most jobs created during 2020-2024, it ranks 1st in job creation4th in FDI volume, and 5th in fDi projects. No wonder, then, that major companies such as AstraZeneca, Teladoc Health, AGC Pharma Chemicals, and Towa Pharmaceutical have already capitalized on Catalonia’s advantages, establishing significant operations in the region. 

The health sector has been one of the sectors that has grown the most in terms of the number of hubs in 2024. Of 160 technological hubs in Catalonia, 11% are in the health sector (17 hubs).

The impact of the Catalan life science sector globally

In 2024, Catalan exports in this area reached €9.17 billion (46% of total Spanish exports), 5.8% over the previous year. Out of the 9,165 firms exporting from Catalonia, the leading exporters in value terms were SwissGerman, and French-owned companies. 

In Catalonia, top scientific talent abounds

In 2023, 19% of graduates in Catalonia earned degrees in health sciences. Since 2012, the number of students pursuing health sciences has increased significantly, contributing to the pool of professionals needed for the new health hubs emerging in Barcelona.

According to Biocat, there are over 15,000 STEM graduates annually in Catalonia. With that and the constant flow of PhDs and masters in life
